Bennett, Bowtell & Urquhart
When they first got together Kevin Bennett, Lyn Bowtell & Felicity Urquhart had no idea that within two years, Bennett, Bowtell and Urquhart would be stepping up to collect not one but two Golden Guitars, for Best Group and Best Alt. Country Album for their 2016 self-titled debut album.
It was at the 2015 Tamworth Country Music Festival that the trio first performed together in what they thought would be a one-off affair. The experience proved so enjoyable they decided not only to do it again, but to then go into the studio and see what happened.
Bennett, Bowtell & Urquhart released their second and most recent Album ‘Weeds’ in Sept 2018, which, in 2019 won them their third Golden Guitar in the ‘Best Vocal Collaboration’ category for their song ‘Every Hello’ with the late Karl Broadie.
Kevin Bennett is a highly respected Singer/Songwriter, with a uniquely profound and soulful voice. Well known for his work with ‘The Flood’, KB writes relevant, contemporary and meaningful Australian music containing elements of blues, rock and country…for which he has received five Golden Guitars and an ARIA nomination. His songs “Paul Kelly’s Blues” and “2003” were nominated for APRA Song of the Year and Song of the Year at the CMAA Golden Guitar Awards.
Lyn Bowtell is one of Australia’s finest Singer/Songwriters, possessing a powerful and evocative voice recognised by her peers as one of the best in the business. An innovative and creative songwriter Lyn defies musical constraint and easy classification, with influences reaching from pure Country to Blues, Jazz and Pop, Lyn has her own distinctive voice and musical identity. Lyn is a nine time Golden Guitar winner, Mo Award winner and Toyota Star Maker winner. Lyn was a contestant on the 2017 season of ‘The Voice Australia’ as a member of Team George.
Felicity Urquhart has long been one of the best-loved and most decorated singer-songwriters in Australian song. A very familiar voice, as much for her regular Saturday Night Country show on ABC local radio as her songs, Felicity has enjoyed a career encompassing six studio albums, two EPs, and countless sold-out headlining shows and capacity festival appearances, Felicity Urquhart has netted fourteen Golden Guitars, an ARIA Award nomination for Best Country Album, four CMAA Australian CM Achiever Awards, and a Centenary Medal for her “service to Australian society through country music”. Felicity is an inductee into the Country Music Awards Hands of Fame.
The combination of the talents of these highly acclaimed artists to form the Folk Country super-group ‘Bennett, Bowtell & Urquhart’ was a masterstroke.
Three unique voices, three strong personalities, three respected songwriters. Together, Bennett Bowtell & Urquhart have the most remarkable musical chemistry, a real meeting of minds, hearts and sensibilities.
‘Bennett, Bowtell & Urquhart’s’ live performance is a beautiful thing to witness, acoustic instruments, three part vocal harmonies, a deep respect for each other and an almost spiritual quality that will lift your spirits and enrich your soul.
A superb musical collaboration – not to be missed under any circumstances!!
“Bennett Bowtell & Urquhart is the sum of incredible parts,” fellow Golden Guitar recipient Shane Nicholson reckons. “Separately amazing and collectively awe-inspiring. Watching them sing is like watching magic being done, except there’s no way to explain or rationalise it. It’s otherworldly and defies science.”
“Weeds is a stunning songbook,” writes Gareth Hipwell of Country Update Magazine, “replete with glorious harmonies, soulful Gospel and classic Country strains, with timeless instrumentation couching some of the most celebrated vocal talent in Australian song”.
